Downturned Smiles

Do you feel like you always look like you have a frown? Not just your typical “RBF” but specifically having a turned down smile? I frequently have people come in with this complaint, and there are a number of different things we can do to improve this. We can literally turn your frown upside.

Toxins

There are two ways to attack this stubborn downturn in our smile. First we address the muscles that tug down on the corner of our mouth. There is a muscle called the Depressor Anguli Oris. or DAO, that pulls on the corners of your mouth. We can relax the corners or you mouth with toxin to allow the corner of the mouth to return to a neutral position. (I personally have this done and it makes a big difference!).

Fillers

Second, we address the “folds” of tissues in our skin. As we age the fat pads in our face start to slide down and contribute to increased volume in the lower part of our face making marionette lines AKA turn down smile (lines/folds from the corner of our mouth to our jawline) look more prominent. We also get those super annoying jowls, or the little fatty area on our jawline. This is simply due to volume loss as we age.. So to fix it, we restore the volume! Simple as that. We use a hyaluronic acid filler (among other treatments) to help restore the volume in the corners of the mouth or marionette lines to support the tissues that have slid down due to natural aging.
